Up until my recent – but still slow-moving adventure into mixed media, I had simply painted – so getting paints, brushes and canvas was pretty easy. Having said that though, I actually order my supplies, for the most part, through a store called “Curry’s” where I always shopped before moving up here to the Bay of Quinte. Their prices are always reasonable and there are usually sales of all kinds going on at any given time. I did notice, that when I ordered my “Gelli plate” – I had not ordered anything since 2013 – my how time flies!
Where I live now, the biggest ‘craft’ type of store is the US chain “Michaels” – but even that store tends to stock only a limited amount of supplies for each type of craft. To top it off, it’s also a lot more expensive than I would have imagined, and so being on a budget of virtually nothing, most of their supplies were off my list for the time being. So when I go online and do some googling, I often end up on sites that either don’t ship to Canada, or if they do, the shipping can end up costing more than the items. In fact that can also be a problem within Canada itself! I have found the odd place in the US that ships here, and their prices are good, but I often find a very limited selection in exactly what it is I am after. I’ve even noticed that our local dollar stores are selling less craft stuff and more food items these days!
Quite a few years ago now I was asked if I could hand make a birthday card, which I did. It was quite simple, and I didn’t really expect to be paid for it as it was for a friend in the UK ( I met her through MySpace many years ago). When she insisted – I simply said, just send me a few bits and pieces for card making and do NOT spend a lot. So, she got the card and I got some little bits and pieces to use which were ‘new to me’ – both of us happy.
Sadly she passed away almost 4 years ago now – way too young – but each time I look through the things she sent that I haven’t yet used, I always think of her, and in fact while I was looking through my photos on my USB stick, there was the card I made for her. Ahhh memories!
Fast forward to 2015 and today I received a parcel from Liz – who had told me she would send me some bits and pieces. Now Liz is amazingly creative and has a supply I could only wish to have, so I was super excited to see what would be in the parcel. I was basically thinking some papers, a few cutouts, some embellishments etc. Boy, was I in for a surprise! I tell you, it felt like Christmas to me – and I don’t really even ‘do’ Christmas any more! A lot of it I have never seen here, so that was extra nice. I can’t wait to use some of it on my work in progress piece – it’ll certainly make that more interesting. For now though, it’s all spread out on my table so I can have a good look and figure out what some of it is actually for 😉
Thank you Liz xxxxxxxx
