A couple of classy ladies…

Taking a break from painting fur, I am getting back into people portraits again and pushing myself to become better.  (I’m also still staring at the water colour papers I have and thinking I really, really should give that a try again too.)

With the digital painting, it has helped that I’ve watched dozens of tutorials, read others, played with the software and of course briefly looked at the help manual! (ha!).   I have never been a lover of reading ‘how to’ do something, although it has it’s place.  I prefer to just get stuck in and try.  Many of the paintings I share here are basically for my own development and in some cases, to eventually get printed to hang in my home. I still have a lot of traditional paintings in storage (some smoke damaged a bit from an apartment fire some years back.)  but I’d really like some ‘new’ art to look at.

Anyway… here are two that I finally completed… (I like to have a couple or three going at once.. so yes, there is still another one I am yet to complete!).

Firstly Grace Kelly – this one was quite the mission but I eventually called it done.   I found getting her lips right was my biggest head scratcher but hopefully it turned out ok.  I love doing hair, so that was the easiest bit, and once again the challenge was her eyes!  (I am determined to get really good at them!)

And then we have one that I really would like to  get a print of (a large one) and hang in my home, (as I have been saying for at least the last 18 months),  and that is the late, great, Billie Holiday!
Having had some of my other work printed, I know how they print compared to how they look on screen. (A bit of a frustrating thing to learn.)  This one I will have to do a little touch up on the eye that is in shadow to make it even darker, so that when it is printed it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. But other than that, I am really happy with it for ‘me’.  So here is Billie Holiday!
Thank you once again for checking in – feel free to leave a comment if you wish… always appreciated.

  1. Another extraordinay sample of your work, Sally. And you captured Grace's lips to perfection. I can just picture her… Amazing!

Both portraits are exquisite. You just get better and better. The great Billie is awesome too.

Best of luck with your pet businesses. They should drool over your works (not literally, of course), but your work is unforgettable.

Keep up the great work and we love your sharing details with us.

  2. Thank you Betty! I've been painting my brains out recently… but it's like anything, if you want to get better, you just have to keep doing it. I'm also finding out more about my software so that I can improve on just using a couple of brushes – but I am still painting the same way I do when I paint with real oils.. I guess some habits take some time to change.. lol xxx
