It’s a dogs life!

I’ve been doing a few pet/animal digital paintings lately – all in aid of learning more and figuring out the best way to paint fur.  Every painter, no matter what medium they use, has their own method and no matter how many tutorials you watch, or tips you read, you still have to find something that works for you.

In my case it’s all about layer upon layer.  Even though in the finished painting it looks like just one layer of ‘fur’, it’s usually quite a few.  Various colours, strengths, blur, opacity and so on until I am happy (more or less) with the result.

I’m seriously thinking I should sit and design my own custom ‘fur brushes’, so that I can use them to speed things up rather than individually paint each strand.  It isn’t hard to do, I just have to remember HOW to do it ..hahaha!

So while my Facebook friends have seen my latest pieces, here they are for those who I know do not use FB!  Funnily enough, even though I have cats… these are all dogs 🙂

This was from a photo I found on a page I follow called Beagle Freedom Project.  They rescue Beagles from laboratories all over the world.   A fantastic group.

This one is of course a German Shepherd, and I was inspired to try this because many years ago I had a GS myself.  His name was “Dougal”, or “Doogz” for short.  He was the runt of a litter bred from a Champion GS, but he unfortunately didn’t live up to their expectations.  He did however live  up to mine 🙂

This is a wee “Doxie” pup!  The reference pic was a little blurry, but I loved his eyes, so of course off I went 🙂

And finally this one… totally inspired from the rescue of “Watson the 3 legged dog”.  You can find his story and videos etc on Facebook.  I fell in love with his cheeky little face, so again, had to have a go!

  1. Such great work Sally! I love them all! I had a thought while reading this blog…you should create a tutorial on how to paint animals and their fur. Just a thought. 🙂 I know for me I stay away from doing most animals other than birds, just because the fur is so intimidating to me. 🙂

  2. I might do that one day Gina… I do sometimes take WIP pics, but then I get all consumed and forget..hahah! Fur has been a real challenge, but the more I do the more I learn (a lot of times thru making a mistake), so it's a real ongoing learning curve.
